The formula

How exactly do you convert square meters to square feet? Let's derive it from first principles.

Step 1: Start with length

Since 1959, the international foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 meters. This is a legal definition, not a measurement.

1 ft = 0.3048 m 1 m = 1 / 0.3048 ≈ 3.2808399 ft

Step 2: Square the relationship

Area is length squared. If you have a square measuring 1 m on each side, its area is 1 m × 1 m = 1 sq m. The same square, measured in feet, is 3.2808399 ft × 3.2808399 ft.

1 sq m = 3.2808399² sq ft 1 sq m = 10.76391041670972 sq ft

Step 3: The clean formula

For everyday use, you only need a few decimal places:

// sq m → sq ft
sq_ft = sq_m × 10.7639
// sq ft → sq m
sq_m = sq_ft × 0.092903
// or equivalently
sq_m = sq_ft / 10.7639

Worked example

You're looking at a 120 sq m apartment in Barcelona. How big is it in sq ft?

120 sq m × 10.7639 = 1,291.67 sq ft

That's a comfortable two-bedroom by US standards (~1,000–1,400 sq ft is typical).

Try it

sq m
sq ft
1 sq m = 10.7639 sq ft
